Wadlopen

On the second day of the symposium we will not simply change venue, but truly experience the journey. With the tide out we will step off a boat onto the seabed of the Wadden Sea and walk to Schiermonnikoog in the Dutch tradition of wadlopen. Rather than an excursion, this is the way we will reach the second location of the conference. For those who prefer not to join, a direct boat transfer to the island will be available.

Seals on a sandbank Seals on a sandbank

The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most remarkable landscapes in the Netherlands. During the short boat ride to the starting point we may already see seals resting on the sandbanks. On foot we will cross mussel beds, oysters, and patches of zeekraal (samphire), which can even be tasted fresh. The walk takes about 1.5–2 hours, sometimes on firm sand, sometimes slippery, and at times sinking into the mud. It is wet and messy, but that is part of the adventure!

Out on the flats everyone is in the same situation: professors, students, speakers, and guests walking side by side. This creates a sense of closeness that no lecture hall can match. Our honorary guest Ben Feringa and other Dutch colleagues will also join, and can share stories about the history and traditions of the region, while professional guides ensure that the crossing is safe and enjoyable.

All participants will be provided with new wadlopen shoes that can be discarded afterwards. We recommend wearing shorts or clothes that can get dirty and bringing a full change of clothes, socks, and shoes for after the walk. Changing on the island will be practical rather than glamorous, with foot sinks and simple facilities, but this is part of being in wild nature. You do not need to know how to swim, as the walk is done at low tide on shallow flats, and you also do not need to be especially sporty. The route is rated suitable for ages six and up. For those interested in a more challenging crossing, a separate guided trip can also be arranged. Photos from our recent group trip are posted below to give you an idea of what to expect, and more background can be found at https://wadlopen-pieterburen.nl.

Upon arrival at Schiermonnikoog we will have time to clean up and change, then gather at the Stag Centrum with a refreshing drink and something sweet before resuming the scientific program at 15:00. The lectures will be followed by dinner on the island, and later in the evening boats will return us to Lauwersoog, with buses taking everyone back to Groningen for the third and final day of the symposium. This walk across the sea floor is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that combines Dutch culture, nature, and science in an unforgettable way.
